The Top Warning Signs of Cancer
Cancer is a group of related diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in tissue. There are many different types of cancer, each with its unique characteristics, including symptoms and treatment methods. The most common cancers include lung, liver, breast, colon and rectum, prostate, and skin cancer, or melanoma. Cancer is very expensive to treat, which is why institutions like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital runs cancer donation programs to aid families with children with cancer. Below are the top warning signs of cancer:
1. An Abnormal Lump or Mass
Any lump or change in size or shape should be investigated. The oncologist will ask about any lumps, bumps, and swellings you have felt. An abnormal lump or mass could signify that cancer has spread to other parts of your body. On the other hand, it may not necessarily mean you have cancer at all. But, if you notice some lump that doesn’t go away and associated symptoms, you should see your doctor immediately.
2. Unusual Bleeding or Discharge
Unusual bleeding or discharge, especially in the genital areas, may be a sign of cancer. Other risks include vaginal or cervical discharge that is greenish, yellow, or dark green and has a bad smell. Your healthcare provider can diagnose these conditions by performing a pelvic exam.
3. Unexplained Fatigue
Unexplained fatigue may be a marker of cancer. There are many types of cancer, some of them causing mysterious fatigue. If you have unsolved fatigue that lasts more than a few days, or if it worsens after any surgery or treatment, it should be assessed as possibly cancer-related.
4. Change in Bowel or Bladder Habits
A change in bowel or bladder habits can be a warning sign of cancer. The most common type of cancer that affects the bowel is called colorectal cancer, which occurs along the colon or ileum (the last section of the small intestine). Colorectal cancer usually starts in a part of the bowel that has already been weakened by other health conditions, such as Crohn’s disease. The other types of cancers that affect the bowel are rarely fatal but require immediate treatment if they are suspected.
5. Excessive Bruising
If you notice a rash, unusual bleeding or bruising, or tenderness in your breast, cancer may have spread to your lymph nodes or other parts of your body. According to The American Cancer Society, chronic or new, unexplained bruises are often a cancer symptom. And if you experience a lot of them—or develop symptoms such as pain in your lymph nodes—you should see your doctor immediately for testing and medical attention.
6. Sudden Weight Loss Without Trying
If you’ve lost weight, listening to your body is important. If most of your weight loss occurs within the first few days of getting sick, it could be a sign of cancer. It’s important to get a blood test and see if there are any changes in your bone marrow also.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to first consult with your doctor for a proper and thorough diagnosis and cancer treatment plan.
